How to Play One Stroke

Everything you need to know — from your first puzzle to mastering Challenge Mode

Updated March 2026Math behind the game

Summary

One Stroke is a free iOS puzzle game where you draw lines to flip tiles in a single continuous stroke. It features two modes: Puzzle Mode with infinite procedurally generated levels and adaptive difficulty, and Challenge Mode with time pressure and combo multipliers. A 3-tier hint system helps when stuck, and all puzzles are mathematically guaranteed to be solvable.

The Basic Rule

One Stroke has a beautifully simple core mechanic:

Draw a line to flip tiles.
Flip all tiles to solve the puzzle.

You draw a continuous line across a grid of tiles. Every tile your line crosses gets flipped. The goal is to flip all tiles into the target state — and you need to do it in a single, unbroken stroke.

It sounds simple. The first few puzzles are. But as the grid gets larger and the patterns more complex, it becomes a genuinely deep logical challenge. This is the beauty of one-stroke puzzles — rooted in centuries-old mathematics, but instantly accessible.

Puzzle Mode: The Main Experience

Puzzle Mode is where most players spend their time. Here's how it works:

Infinite, Always-Fresh Puzzles

Every puzzle is procedurally generated — created by an algorithm on the fly. This means you'll never see the same puzzle twice, and the game never runs out of content. Every puzzle is mathematically guaranteed to have at least one solution.

Adaptive Difficulty

This is one of One Stroke's standout features. The game watches how you play:

The result is that you're always in a flow state — challenged enough to stay engaged, but not so overwhelmed that it stops being fun.

The 3-Tier Hint System

Stuck on a puzzle? One Stroke gives you three levels of help:

Tier 1 — Nudge

A subtle hint about which direction or area to focus on. Keeps the challenge alive.

Tier 2 — Partial Reveal

Shows part of the solution path. Good for when you have the right idea but can't quite see the full picture.

Tier 3 — Full Solution

Reveals the complete answer. Use this to learn, then try to solve similar patterns on your own next time.

Hints are available by watching a short optional ad — you're never forced to see ads during normal gameplay.

Challenge Mode: The Competitive Side

Once you're comfortable with the basics, Challenge Mode adds a whole new dimension:

Challenge Mode transforms One Stroke from a calm meditation into an adrenaline-pumping score chase. It's the same elegant mechanic, but with stakes.

Challenge Mode Tips

General Tips & Strategies

1. Start From the Edges

Edge and corner tiles are the most constrained — they have fewer possible paths through them. Solving edges first often makes the interior fall into place.

2. Think in Parity

Each tile needs to be crossed an odd number of times to flip. If a tile is already in the correct state, you need to cross it zero or an even number of times. This parity logic is the key to solving harder puzzles.

3. Use Tier 1 Hints Freely

Don't jump straight to the full solution. Tier 1 nudges preserve the satisfaction of solving while unsticking you. The learning value is much higher.

4. Let the Sounds Guide You

The procedural audio isn't just decoration — tonal changes can give you subtle feedback about whether you're on the right track. Turn your volume up.

5. Understand the Math

One-stroke puzzles are based on Euler paths from graph theory. Understanding the odd/even vertex rule can help you see solutions faster. Visit our Learn section to go deeper.

Common Questions

What is the basic rule of One Stroke?

Draw a line across tiles to flip them. Your goal is to flip all tiles to the target state using a single continuous stroke without retracing your path.

How does the hint system work?

One Stroke has a 3-tier hint system. Tier 1 gives a subtle directional nudge. Tier 2 reveals part of the solution path. Tier 3 shows the complete solution. You can watch an optional ad to unlock hints — no forced ads during gameplay.

How do combos work in Challenge Mode?

Clearing rows in rapid succession builds combo multipliers. The faster you clear consecutive rows, the higher your score multiplier. Try to chain clears without pausing.

Does difficulty keep getting harder forever?

The adaptive difficulty system finds your personal sweet spot and adjusts around it. It won't just keep getting impossibly hard — it aims to keep you in a flow state where you're challenged but still succeeding most of the time.

Can every puzzle be solved?

Yes. Every procedurally generated puzzle in One Stroke is mathematically guaranteed to have at least one solution. If a puzzle feels impossible, try a different starting point or use a Tier 1 hint.
